Note from editor

South East Asia is home to many different religious traditions. It is a region
where Hindu, Chinese, Buddhist, Muslim and Christian communities have
intermingled for centuries. Since ancient times, it has been the meeting ground
for the civilisations of India and China. Its religious and cultural territory
spans Confucian Singapore, Buddhist Thailand, Muslim Malaysia and
Indonesia, and the Catholic Philippines. Each of these countries contain a
significant number of Taoists, Hindus and Christians froma wide variety of
different denominations. It is therefore fitting that a Singapore Baha'i Studies
Review journal be dedicated to the Baha'i principle of the "Fundamental
Unity of Religions".

Most of the papers in this volume began as talks given at the 2nd Singapore
Baha'i Studies conference held on the 12th April 1997, at the Kent Vale
Community Hall, Singapore. The editor would like to thank the authors whom
he closely worked with over the last six months, for their openness, cooperation, and patience. Thanks must also go to Antonella Khursheed for the
journal type-setting, and to Lynette Thomas for her meticulous copy-editing,
which, in some instances, involved remarkable detective work.
